Things Teenagers Do That I Don't Understand

Use of Automatic Doors
I've seen this not only on my college campus but on the ones I've visited, too. I see kids go up to doors and, instead of taking 2 seconds to open them, they press the disabled access button. It would be totally justifiable if they were a.) carrying something so they couldn't use their hands or b.) actually disabled but most likely they're not.
Excessive Cell Phone Use
When I got to school I used to put my phone on airplane mode so nothing would make any sounds during class. Then I realized what a waste that was and I turned my phone off instead. I see students constantly on their phones during class time when they should be paying attention but I can't see what could be so exciting.
Smart Phones
Why do kids have smart phones? Do they run a business? Do they have a job so important that they need to be able to check their email any time, anywhere? More than likely, no. They're playing fruit ninja and checking their Facebook. The most exciting thing my phone can do is play tetris. I can't even take video.
Chewing Gum
I don't really see as many people chewing gum in college since I guessed it stopped being cool once it was allowed. High schoolers are crazy about gum. But why though? It's not like real food. The flavor lasts for maybe 15 minutes and then you have this wad of flavorless gunk that you have to chew. People constantly get in trouble for it in high school, and even though they were told to throw it away they'd pop another stick in. It doesn't even make any sense.
The Friend Zone
It's classic; boy and girl are friends, boy likes girl, girl wants to remain friends. Now some cases for the friend zone I understand but others I don't. If a girl hugs, kisses, cuddles, or otherwise acts in an affectionate way towards a boy, why are they surprised when he starts to like her? What the heck women, make up your mind.

one more addition to this fabulous list: teenage boys wearing their pants below their behinds. i mean, it's one thing to see a teeny bit of a boxer but nowadays you see a guy on the street, one hand holding his smartphone, the other one holding up his pants. when will this stop???

as a teen i can answer :P

1) for the automatic doors, this isn't necessarily teenagers, just lazy people. i think that teens just have less shame

2) its exciting being a teen and having friends. theyre texting about how dull your lesson is, most likely. :D

3) why would anyone not have a smart phone when they are just a computer you can fit in your pocket, and are affordable?

4) it's something to do in the dull lesson, when not able to use the phone. :P

5) again, not just teenagers. this is just you bitching about women. lol

What about texting at a red light then still sitting there as it turns green and everyone starts honking.

1) I can honestly say I do not understand your complaint on the use of automatic doors, I have never seen a teenager use the disabled button on an automatic door. (????)
2) Excessive cell phone use. I don't expect you to understand why people would use cell phones seeing as you don't quite comprehend why people have smartphones, but here's some ways people use cell phones in the real world.
-Recording lectures
-Taking notes
-Looking things up
-Dropbox, google docs, lumosity
-Yes, texting, tumblr, instagram.
Perhaps you have failed to use technology as it was intended because most people use their cell phones to broaden their cultural experiences. Tumblr is a great network for humor, social issue debate, politics, opinions and news. We can get inspired by quotes from great writers and support each other in times of need. Instagram is a beautiful platform for amateur artists and plain jane's to share their life on their terms. So I would not say that cell phone use is in excess.
3) No, most teenagers do not run a business, but coincidentally, not all smartphones were designed for businessmen and women. Wow!! In fact they were designed for, get this, public use! You're quite right, it is incredible that those lower class kids who aren't businessmen have access to smartphones. Dagnabbit! Those damn kids. Yeah, kids probably don't need to check their email for business notifications, but THAT ISN'T WHAT THEY USE THEM FOR. I'm glad your deprivation makes you feel superior but you're just as reliant on technology as anyone else.
4) Chewing gum. I'm not even going to address this because I cannot fathom why this bothers you.
5) The friend zone. Really? The friend zone is a form of slut-shaming. What you're basically saying is "a woman is nice to a man, so now she has to have sex with him." I don't think so. Don't blame the friend zone for your weak game and wack ass personality. Get this: WOMEN ARE ACTUALLY NOT REQUIRED TO HAVE SEX WITH YOU JUST BECAUSE THEY FLIRT WITH YOU AND ARE NICE TO YOU! WOW!!!
6) Pants. I'm glad you miss the good ol' days but from what I can tell you're like 20 and in college. What you're observing here is something we like to call a "fashion trend" it's a form of self expression and like all fashion it's completely up to the person who's wearing it to deem whether or not it looks good. It's not up to you. Expand your mind a little bit, you're in college. Jesus.
